Low speed handpieces can have long life spans due to the lower operating speeds and design differences compared to their high speed counterparts. Low speed motors typically operate at speeds less than 50,000 RPMs, whereas high speeds can approach 450,000 RPMs.

Low speeds are designed to create a lot of torque, which allows for much better control when performing selective decay removal, out of the mouth adjustments, prophy procedures, and root canals. There are two different motor designs commonly used in the field. For example, a Star Titan motor relies on a rotor/vane system. The Midwest Shorty, on the other hand, uses a turbine much like that of a high speed handpiece.

Some of the telltale signs of a low speed motor breakdown include high pressure startups, excessive vibrations, and a frozen or locked assembly. Various attachments are also used in conjunction with the motor, depending on the procedure being performed, and these can fail as well, with the major symptoms being frozen bearings and chuck issues with the straight attachments.
